It’s tree bark. At one time a small twig began to grow from the center of that spot, and the tree strengthened itself where the twig joined the tree, preparing for the day it became a branch. Instead, the twig was lost and the tree began slowly covering over the opening with bark, ever adapting, centered in its mission of growth and survival.
