Clouded Sulfur Butterfly

A clouded sulfur butterfly on a calendula flower, as if she chose the best coordinate for her coloring. And it looks as if she’s sipping sunshine.

The butterflies are returning to my little habitat after the deer have spent a few persistent years eating all the native pollinator plants down to nothing. Deer are still here, but Liquid Fence products are keeping them at bay. I’ve also seen a few tiger swallowtails which had always been all over the place here which back in the 90s got me identifying butterflies and developing my Backyard Wildlife Habitat. Mostly it’s been cabbage whites with others scattered through migration season. This year enough flowers have been able to grow and bloom for butterflies to decide to stop and visit, and hopefully they’ll find a home here again.
