Mellow Mallow

One of the many flowers to begin blooming in the little patch of flower mixes I planted in May, a species of mallow that I might identify as Lavatera, but not entirely sure. The flower resembles a pink Rose of Sharon but is about 1/3 the size and the plant has a narrow stem that’s beginning to branch and add more flower buds.

Mallow species are all over, really common in both the wildflower field, along the road in ditches, or in formal gardens, from hibiscus and hollyhocks to Malva neglecta or common mallow that grows in cracks in the street. Just about all of them are entirely edible as greens or tea whether considered a weed or not.

I got the seeds in small bags from Dollar Tree and planted both Wildflower Mix and Hummingbird Mix in the same area. Both bags have a list of about 30 species or more that are possibly in there, some of which I know and some not. It’s exciting to see each flower that shows up, and see if any pollinators interact. So far this is pretty popular with bees.
