Old Friends Watch the Sunset

Old Friends

Two old apple trees have seen many sunsets and weathered many storms atop this hill.

At sunset I always turn around and look at the sky to the east, which catches the last of the glow and softens it, none of the flash of the fiery sun and gilt-edged clouds. Just as it is opposite the sunset in the sky, so it is the opposite of the sunset, a contemplative backdrop of the sunset’s muted colors, a softer violet, a cooler pink, dusky.
