More Yellow Wildflowers Corydalis flavula (yellow fumewort) Meet Corydalis flavula or Yellow Fumewort. Personally, I prefer Corydalis Flavula because that sounds like a courageous and exotic heroine in any genera of fiction. I was cruising wildflowers again in the woods along the Panhandle Trail, five days after the last visit and one week after my first visit of the season. Things change so fast! Clumps of coltsfoot were populous all along the trail and even in light woods, but I only found one small clump, fairly wilted. The flowers are gone, but the seed heads will grow into poufs like dandelion. The big bloom for spring beauty is at an ebb but it will continue blooming one or two flowers on a plant for a week or so. But new yellow flowers do continue to appear, and I’d actually never seen this flower in any of my travels on the trail or in the woods. I only found this plant in one area in the small portion of the trail and woods I’ve been exploring, in an area that’s recently been groomed a bit around a pond so it may have been hidden in taller wildflowers up to now. I also don’t like to walk into areas where I’ll step on a number of wildflowers so I don’t always get close enough to an area. These interesting flowers don’t show their details until you get really close. I think it’s just begin blooming so I expect to see more popping up as I continue to visit. Corydalis detail of leaves Below is a species of buttercup named for this state—Ranunculus pensylvanicus. So many species of buttercup but this variety is subtle. No yellow “cup”! But still welcome.
