In a Sea of White Blossoms, Be a Pink One The pink blossom on the Cascadia peas. “In a garden full of white pea flowers, be a pink one.” It all started out with one pink blossom among all the pea plants in my garden. Nearly all pea flowers are white, but there are a few varieties that have pink or magenta or red flowers, and sometimes there can be a gene suppression or mutation. I planted a packet of Cascadia peas in this one particular spot. I often find one seed in a packet has sprouted a different variety of that species, which just means that either the pollinators got busy or trying to keep all those seeds sorted at the farms where plants are grown for seed can be like herding cats, something I know quite a bit about. “But for now, I’m just going to enjoy this pretty pink pea flower for what she is.” Then a day later… The magenta and purple blossoms on the Green Arrow peas. “Not to be outdone by the Cascadia peas’ pink blossom the other day, the Green Arrow peas said, “Hold my compost,” and produced these purple and magenta blossoms both on the same plant.” I had planted a few more varieties and they are all blooming right now. I won’t be at all unhappy if the peas go into a competition to see who can produce the most unusual or beautiful flowers. . . . . . . . Follow me on Instagram.
