Finches Feast Finches feasting on native forget-me-not seeds. The best thing about growing a yard full of native plants is seeing native birds feasting on the seeds. I’ve always had the non-native “forget-me-nots” in my yard, Myosotis Sylvatica, or woodland forget-me-not, which are native to Eurasia. I found a cluster of Myosotis Laxa growing out of a crack in the sidewalk in the neighborhood and pulled out what I could get with roots to immediately plant it in my yard. Enough flowers went to seed to produce plants the next year, and now my front yard is carpeted with these delicate plants that bloomed in a gentle pale-blue speckled green cushion. The oldest flowers have gone to seed, and the finches were ready. They’ve been out there day after day stocking up on what appears to be a really favorite meal. You can see at least three in the photo below, though there were about six out there in this space. Finches feasting on native forget-me-not seeds. I still like my Myosotis Sylvatica with its bigger and brighter blue flowers growing in clusters and filling my back yard, and I did see insects putting them to use, but never songbirds.
