A Hummingbird in the Catnip!

I’ve been enjoying watching the house finches and goldfinches in the catnip but today I saw a hummingbird out there! My photo is a little blurry because I was photographing through my screen door which make the photo a little softer, and I have to manually focus which makes it difficult to follow a hummingbird.

Unlike the finches digging out the seeds, this little lady is visiting for nectar in the tiny tube-shaped flowers. I don’t know why thought of it before because all the mints and many herbs have flower spikes of tube-shaped flowers and I’ve seen hummingbirds at oregano and basil.

But they do have to stop and rest, perching on a branch now and then, and this little one flew up into the spruce for a conveniently tiny perch to wrap her claws around.

 

I had noticed the finches visited my native forget-me-nots when they went to seed, but this is the first time I’ve seen them in the catnip. It’s a wild native plant and showed up in my yard years ago and my cats have been pretty happy about that. Guess the finches just found it and are pretty happy with it too. Another reason to grow catnip.
