Bluebells Are Ringing

Spanish bluebell or wood hyacinth, bluebells are ringing in the partial shade of my woodland garden. I always forget they are there until the cluster of grassy fronds that I think is one of the daffodils that didn’t bloom suddenly sprouts stalks with buds and the bluebells start ringing, a welcome color there in the speckled sunlight between daffodils and cranesbill geraniums.

Hyacinthoides hispanica goes by both names because it is often confused with the spring bulb-blooming hyacinth though it’s actually a bluebell native to Spain, hardier than either English or our native bluebells so came to be exported and naturalized in Europe, then of course in the rest of the world, traveling with people moving around the globe.
