Beautiful Old Scars

knot on tree branch
Beautiful Old Scars

It’s not a bird nest, but it looks like one. It’s an interesting old knot on a very old branch that fell from my neighbor’s tree into my yard, where a smaller branch was once connected, fell, and then the bark grew over in successive layers where it had fallen away to cover the open area and protect the interior of the tree. The branch is so old there was no other bark left on it but a few similar knots. So many branches have fallen in the past few years, smashing my fences and my wooden park bench. Got a good start on cleaning up out there.
