What Snow Masks and Reveals

The tangled upper branches and twigs of my neighbor’s maple tree piled with snow above, revealing the magenta leaf buds bright against the snow.

Snow masks, falls and blankets, smoothing, covering, but also revealing details, shiny berries, natural structures, undersides, changing perspective.

Bee balm seed pods stand all winter to feed birds, blending into the landscape, but each capped by its own distinct fluff of snow.

The burning bush continues color through the winter with tiny red berries that fade in among the twigs, clearly brilliant red against the snow.

Bare branches go this way and that on my mulberry tree, blending together in umber shades but each outlined with a frosting of snow.

Not a tall spruce but a small goldenrod flower head faded from warm yellow to amber gray and delicately laced with snow.
