We Watch Over You

I have always felt this way when I looked at the trees above me while I walked in the woods, that the trees watch over me as I wander and create. Even the bare branches of winter feel protective. Now they look joyful with the colors of autumn.

Autumn has been developing most beautifully and I keep trying to find the time to get out there and have a few hours in the woods to paint and photograph and just walk barefoot on the trails at least one last time this year. Though a weekday, I felt the big blue sky calling me and packed a sandwich and an apple and some water and made sure I had some pastels and papers in my backpack and I took off.

One of my goals was to create at least a small painting en plein air, or “in the open air,” a practice that is both a challenge and a joy, and improves my painting practice generally by refreshing what landscapes not only look but what they feel like.
