A Half-mile Walk With a Purpose

Just 10 selections of what I found as I walked a half mile from the service station to my house after dropping off my car for service, presented in the order I took them.

Above, the geese fly overhead, following the creek. Below, fresh leaves of perennial wildflowers are sugar-edged in frost.

I took about 200, many of them searching for the meaning of why this thing inspired me.

Long-forgotten tracks overgrown with trees disappear in the mist as the sun rises.

I call this exercise, creative exercise, for when I got home and got back to work to be creative all day long.

A classic Buick hangs in the repair lot with newer cars, the frost melting down its angles and sun reflecting from its chrome.

It was physical exercise too, climbing up and down, crawling along the ground, reaching, squatting, kneeling, walking backward, and absolute fun.

Superior Steel was a major employer in the valley for nearly a century, now all that’s left is one wall with an inscription.

No matter what you do, you need to keep in shape.

Some anonymous metal parts in the back of a truck make a neat pattern.

The neighborhood watch cat keeps track of traffic moving at the light from his sunny window.

A nice collection of red chairs brightens up a front porch in winter morning sun.

A lost sugar bowl is found after the leaves fall from vines along a side street.

Carnegie’s streets are hazy with morning mist while the much taller domes of the Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox churches rise above the mist and catch the sun as it comes over the hill, illuminated and saturated with color.

I prepared these photos to share on Instagram yesterday when I got home, so they are all the same size and shape because IG likes that. I’ll be revisiting some of these in time, and also sharing many of the others I didn’t feature here.
