These were not the clouds that were, but they were the clouds I saw.

Just as afternoon begins to fall on a winter day the clouds begin to color with the lowering sun, that creamy yellow with smudges of pink and purple, whispies fluttering off in the cold air above.

I saw the clouds yesterday but couldn’t take the time to paint them. Today was as clear as if the sky was a blue glass bowl over the landscape, not a could to be seen. Except in my memory, and that’s what I painted.

For this painting I used my big box of better pastels, the Sennelier, because I knew I’d find the right colors there. This is another self-prepared 8″ x 11″ Richeson hardboard panel with Colourfix Fine blue ground, two coats sanded in between.

I’m participating in Leslie Saeta’s 30 Paintings in 30 Days (30/30) Challenge for 2016—that’s 30 works of some sort, one for each day of the month.

I’m looking forward to more sketches this month. They won’t all appear here—yesterday I did a sketch including all my foster cats and kittens from 2015 and published it on The Creative Cat.
