Geraniums in October

Geraniums aren't bothered by a cold rain.

Geraniums are pretty tough plants. The temperatures were in the 30s Fahrenheit last night, with rain and wind, but they just keep on blooming. Soon I’ll stash them in my basement for the winter where they’ll dry out and lose all their leaves, but bloom again right after the new year. I’ll change out their soil, put them out in the spring rains in April and they’ll grow new leaves and start blooming in May.

The sun comes out and shows off the color.

I take cuttings from them each spring and start new plants in addition to the older ones. Each new plant is a different shade of coral or pink. I have no idea how old the original plants are, or how many generations from them the rest of the plants are. Some things are so worth the effort for the beauty they’ve consistently produced over decades.
