First Blooms

First Bloom
First Bloom

I planted this hydrangea several years ago but icy storms seemed to take it down each spring before it bloomed. Some years it barely had leaves and I thought for certain I’d lose it.

This year it is still small but has finally bloomed. I am fascinated by the color changes from the first buds through each stage of the flower’s opening and aging, from spring green through pink through lavender and violet to purple. I’ll be able to keep the dried flowers to make an arrangement or wreath for my front porch for autumn or the holidays.

Last year my largest tree fell and covered much of my yard, a good bit of it is overgrown with the effort of cleaning up and repairing my fences. Not much that usually blooms has even shown its leaves this year. This hydrangea blooming finally is a gift.

These two colors, this bright violet and cream, are my favorite.
