Feather Moss Celebration

Feather Moss Celebration

I love it when the mosses on the fallen logs in the woods, flattened and faded after winter, suddenly brighten and send up their antennae to see if the coast is clear. I usually have my DSLR with me and crawl around getting good angles at the tiny scenes but I only had my cell phone with me when I stopped for a quick visit to the trail and woods on the usually warm March afternoon last week. Not the best but capturing the moment was the thing. Just a week prior the moss was a bit brighter than after the snow had melted but no little seekers looking for spring yet. This week they were all over, on all the logs and twigs and leaves and all the rocks.

I’m no moss expert because there are so many, but this one looks like a feathermoss variety, likely Pleurozium schreberi, a red-stemmed feathermoss and the one I probably like the best for the contrast between the yellow-green moss and the deep brick-red stems of the sporangium. They look especially festive with their green hats.

I also had a chance to walk barefoot and step into the stream barefoot on the last day of March. I’ll be sharing the other spring flowers I found along with a few interesting artifacts and scenes which I’ll be sharing in the next several days.
